The Golden Eagles as they are fondly called is the greatest world champions at this category, they won the first edition and have been consistently successful winning a record five times.
Nigeria have dominated this tournament, always reaching the finals whenever they get past their quarter final opponents, from the nineteen edition they have qualified twelve times and only failed to go beyond the group stage just once, they have been finalist a record eight times, their trophy haul is more than the total won by south America with only Brazil with four, also better than north America and Mexico with two and Asia`s Saudi Arabia with one, current world champions Germany has increased Europe`s total to five which is equal to Nigeria`s tally but Africa with Ghana`s two are the leaders with seven. This is Africa`s most successful world cup and Nigeria have played a major role in this feat.
The Eighties; Nigeria takes the Initiative
For the three editions held in the eighties, Nigeria took an early initiative, in the inaugural tournament held in China in 1985, grouped with European giants Italy, famous for their exploits at the senior level, Coasta Rica and Saudi Arabia, Nigeria finished joint top without conceding a goal drawing with the Asians and winning the other two encounters with a comprehensive thrashing of their opponents from CONCACAF and a lone goal victory against the Italians. They conceded for the first time in the second minute of the quarter finals against Hungary incidentally, the Europeans had a similar 4-0 goals aggregate from their group matches but were ahead of Brazil in their standings because of their 1-0 victory against them, Nigeria equalized breaching their defense for the first time and scored two more goals confirming their superiority, Nigeria defeated Guinea in an all-African semifinal on penalties after the match was tied at 1-1. Nigeria defeated super power West Germany in the finals by two unreplied goals, scoring in both halves, The second was a beautiful goal unleashed by Victor Igbinoba after turning past two defenders with deft touch and ball control, with the second goal from Victor, victory was assured. It was the first time an African team had won a FIFA World Cup—a significant moment in the continent’s history, with Nigeria leading the way. They reached the finals in Canada losing on penalties to the USSR now known as Russia, both drew their first match 1-1, with Nigeria defeating Bolivia 3-2 and losing by a lone goal to Mexico, finishing behind the Europeans, at the knock out stage they defeated Australia and then Italy both by a lone goal to reach the finals, The Soviet Union had been impressive hitting Mexico 7-0 a tournament record at that time and Ivory Coast 5-1 in the semifinals, both sides cancelled each other again 1-1 and were only separated by penalties with Nigeria losing by 2-4, relinquishing their title, Ivory Coast took bronze and their player moussa Toure took home the golden shoe after scoring five goals with Nigeria`s Philip Osondu finishing second with four goals. It was a trend with Africa having two semifinalists in both editions and all the available medals, Nigeria with the gold and silver and Ivory Coast with the bronze. The third edition in Scotland was less successful for them, Ghana and Guinea failed to qualify from their group while Nigeria topped theirs for the first-time dispatching Canada 4-0 and China 3-0 and drawing with Argentina in their second match, it was a surprise when they lost on penalties to Saudi Arabia in the quarter finals after a goalless regulation time score line and even more surprising when they could not score during the shootout. It was not all bad news, they produced notable players victor Ikpeba and Godwin Okpara, others such as Benedict Akwuegbu and goalkeeper Aikhuomogbe, joining other illustrious stars from the previous tournaments Osondu from Canada and world champions Victor Igbinoba, Bilia Momoh, Jonathan Akpoborie and captain Nduka Ugbade. The host Scotland reached the finals for the first time losing to Nigeria`s conquerors Saudi Arabia, Asia`s first football world champion. Guinea’s Fode Camara won the golden shoe, three goals was enough while the Nigeria`s duo of Ikpeba and Keshiro finished with several others in second position with two goals.
The Nineties; Africa takes the treble and Brazil the first champions to retain the title
Africa was gradually catching up with Nigeria with two semifinalists from the first two editions, Ghana, Congo and Sudan qualified and the black starlets of Ghana took charge in their absence in Italy, they went for gold, Ghana with their short passing and entertaining football took center stage, at the group stage they finished behind Spain, and both played the finals which the west Africans won 1-0, the goal was scored by Duah in the 77th minute. An improvement from the 1-1 draw played at the group stage. Brazil the team that Ghana defeated in the quarter finals and the new world champions produced the tournament’s highest goal scorers Adriano and Nil Odartey Lamptey with four goals each with the south American winning the golden shoe and the west African, the golden ball. some notable future stars produced at this tournament was Del Piero, Veron and Kuffour.
At the next edition in Japan, Africa produced both Finalists a record at that time, the defending champion were in group A with the host, they won all their matches beating Japan 1-0, Mexico 4-1 and Italy 4-0. Nigeria in group B was more impressive they defeated Canada 8-0,Argentina 4-0 and Australia 2-0, the kick in was introduced as a test run to replace the throw in. meanwhile both teams were the only teams with maximum points, in the quarter finals, Ghana defeated Australia 1-0 with a goal scored in extra time while Nigeria sent the host Japan home winning 2-1, both sides had played the host Japan, a similar opponent and it was a sort of assessment of which of the Africa side had an edge, in the semifinals the current champions thrashed Chile 3-0 and Nigeria stopped Poland 2-1. In the final match Nigeria took an early lead in a battle of supremacy against the world champions, Wilson Oruma with a powerful diving header in the third minute and Anosike doubled the lead with fifteen minutes remaining, Fameye pulled a goal back to set up a nail biting finish but Nigeria prevailed 2-1, with the score reflecting the number of titles both sides had, Nigeria with two titles to Ghana`s one, the defending champion just like Nigeria in 1987 failed to retain the trophy, but Africa won the two editions in succession, it was also a clean sweep at the individual awards with Nigeria `s Oruma winning the golden boot while Kanu and Anosike finished behind with Chile`s Neira with 4 goals. Other notable stars were the Italians Totti and Buffon with Kuffour already a world champion from the previous edition, which was achieved with teammates Emmanuel Duah and Daniel Addo, the three of them were eligible and added silver and a slice of history. Playing in two tournaments and reaching both finals. Kuffour went on to become a Bayern Munich great, helping them to win the champions league in 2001 and scored the winner against Boca Juniors at the intercontinental cup in the same year, he was man of the match for his contribution against the Argentines. he also played for his country at the world cup in Germany 2006.
The sixth edition was held in Ecuador and the expectations were high due to Africa`s dominant display in Japan, Ghana dominated their group defeating previous host Japan and the current host Ecuador 1-0 and 2-1 respectively and a solid 2-0 win against the United States. While Nigeria started slowly with a 1-1 draw with Qatar before winning their next matches 2-0 against Australia and 2-1 against Spain. In the quarter finals Ghana won against Portugal 2-0 and Nigeria surprisingly lost to Oman despite taking an early lead, a penalty scored by Chukwueke in the 13th minute, they lost 2-1. Ghana won against Oman in the semi finals in a convincing 3-1 win, In the finals against Brazil they won 3-2 in a thrilling encounter equaling Nigeria`s two titles and extending Africa`s lead to four, Africa had reached five finals from six editions and were the only continent with both finalists in Japan, it was three titles in succession. African`s treble,is still a record. Brazil was building momentum and went on to reach the finals two years later in Egypt, Nigeria did not make it in this and the next edition. Ghana was setting the standard in Africa, they finished top of their group drawing goalless with Argentina, thrashing Bahrain 5-1 and defeating Coasta Rica 2-0. All the African teams reached the last eight, Defending champion Ghana, Host Egypt and Mali. Ghana were the only African side in the last four when they put four goals past Oman a team they defeated in Ecuador in the semifinals, they had another rematch with Spain, a team they defeated to win their first title in 1991, they won 2-1 and set up the final rematch of the last edition, if they won, it will be the first time a team will defend the title and it will take them ahead in the title race with three titles but they lost despite winning the first half, they succumbed to the South Americans by two second half strikes. It was Brazil`s first title and they became the first team to win the U17, U20 and the senior world cup with Ronaldinho their most remarkable talent from that team, reaching the very heights of football, Africa had their own revelation in Mali`s Seydou Keita both played in the all-conquering Barcelona team that won the champions league, the Brazilian in 2006 while the Malian in 2009 and the club`s first treble win in 2011. Xavi also made his mark and was a very important part of Barcelona`s winning team during Ronaldinho and Keita`s time and beyond, winning the Catalan`s second treble in 2015.Iker Casillas was also discovered in this tournament and went on to become one of the greatest goal keepers in modern football history.
In the next edition held in New Zealand, Brazil had two goalless draws with Mali and Germany and finished second behind Australia a team they defeated in the opening group match 2-1, Ghana were Africa`s leading light and reached the semi finals losing a rematch against Brazil on penalties after a 2-2 draw, they bravely clawed back from a two goals deficit, one of Ghana`s best ever player Michael Essien scored their first penalty kick but it was not enough they eventually lost 2-4, they took consolation by winning bronze and the golden shoe with Ishmael Addo with seven goals. They set a precedence reaching five consecutive semifinals (1991,1993,1995,1997,1999) winning two from four consecutive finals. Brazil won another penalty shootout match by defeating Australia 8-7, it was the first time any team had won the tournament in succession, becoming the first and only side to win back-to-back titles at all the FIFA tournaments, U20(1983,1985) senior world cup (1958,1962) even adding the Olympic titles (2016,2020) they tied with Nigeria and Ghana with two titles. The American Landon Donovan won the golden ball, he also had a teammate Oguchi Onyewu that went on to play for Newcastle, Milan and Twente where he won the Dutch cup in 2011, both went on to help team USA in winning the 2005,2007, and 2013 CONCACAF gold cup. while Spain produced some future stars which included Arteta and Pepe Reina.
Nigeria retakes the lead in the 21st Century
In the Trinidad and Tobago edition, both previous finalists Brazil and Australia were paired again and Brazil also prevailed, they won by a lone goal and in reverse topped the group with the host finishing bottom. Nigeria, African champion dominated their group, winning all three matches beating France 2-1, Japan 4-0 and the United States 2-0, Burkina Faso and Mali joined Nigeria in the quarter finals with France knocking out Brazil and Nigeria thrashing Australia 5-1, they reached another final when Femi Opabunmi`s fourth minute penalty the difference against west Africa opponents Burkina Faso. In the repeat of their group match against France they lost 3-0 with the tournament`s highest goal scorer Florent Pongolle setting a record with nine goals he also won the golden ball, he scored in the finals. Burkina Faso took bronze by defeating Tevez`s Argentina 2-0. Nigeria were African champions for the first time but were unable to win the world cup, all their losses in the finals were against European opposition. The tenth edition was held in Finland with Nigeria unable to come out from a difficult group, it was the only time in their history despite tying on four points with Costa Rica, both had scored and conceded three goals each, lots were cast which went against them. The silver lining from this painful exit was the discovery of Vanzekin, Obasi, Isaac Promise and especially Mikel Obi. it was more of a victory for youth development fulfilling the other major objective of tournament football, providing exposure and experience to players that will progress their careers for future victories. The other African participants Cameroun and Sierra Leone did not advance.it was Africa`s lowest point. Cameroun like their big brothers at the 1982 senior world cup were undefeated drawing all three matches, they played 1-1 with both Brazil and Yemen and an extraordinary 5-5 with Portugal, like in Spain, their group produced the champion. Spain again reached another final, their second since 1991 and Cameroun`s group leaders Brazil won by defeating the Europeans by a lone goal. The south Americans became the most successful side with three titles moving ahead of the African duo Nigeria and Ghana. The tournament produced Fabregas the best player and highest goal scorer, he had 5 goals despite playing from the midfield, other notable stars were his compatriot David Silva, Argentina`s Biglia and Ezequiel Garay and America`s Freddy Adu. Brazil also won the U20 world cup, the first team to hold both at the same time interestingly, the four semifinalists in both tournaments were the same; Brazil beating Spain in both finals while Argentina and Colombia played the classification match, Argentina won Bronze at the U17 while Colombia did the same at the U20. In Peru 2005, Africa equaled their lowest achievement from the previous edition failing to advance to the knockout stage and Ghana matched Cameroun`s record by drawing all their matches, the score line was identical, a 1-1 result against Costa Rica, China and host Peru. Brazil reached another final but lost their title to new champions Mexico by three unreplied goals. Anderson won the golden ball famous for his career with Manchester United, he won the champions league with them in 2008 while Carlos Vela won the golden shoe with five goals, Turkish player Nuri Sahin won the bronze ball while Giovani Dos Santos won the silver ball, he went on to win the gold medal for Mexico in 2012 at the Olympics defeating Brazil again in the finals.
Nigeria participated again in Asia, south Korea precisely, topping their group, they won their first match against France 2-1 gaining some sort of revenge from their painful final loss six years ago, the African champion defeated Japan 3-0 and Haiti 4-1 with Chrisantus scoring a goal in each of the three matches, Tunisia also finished as group leaders with maximum points Ghana qualified behind Germany. It was an enlarged format with 24 teams, in the round of 16, Nigeria defeated Colombia 2-1 and Ghana finally got the better of Brazil winning by a lone goal, France knocked out Tunisia scoring two goals in extra time after the match was tied at 1-1. In the quarter finals Nigeria defeated Argentina 2-0 while Ghana also brushed aside their south American counterpart Peru by the same margin. England was making their mark in the tournament, it was their debut, they were knocked out by Germany with the impressive Kroos, 2006 European golden ball winner scoring the fourth and final goal in a 4-1 win, England had some exciting players Jordan Spence, Rhys Murphy, Victor Moses with both Danny’s, Rose and Welbeck. They had started a wonderful youth team rebuild which would yield several dividends. in the semifinals, Spain defeated Ghana with Bojan scoring the winner in extra time after it had ended 1-1 while Nigeria defeated Germany 3-1, Christanus and Alfa giving them a commanding two goal lead with the mercurian Kross halving the deficit in the 33rd minute Akinsola made certain of the victory in injury time. Spain reached their third final but fell short once again, losing to the Golden Eaglets in a penalty shootout after a goalless encounter, they failed to score a single goal in the penalty shootout with the Africans prevailing 3-0 joining Brazil with three titles.it was the first time Nigeria will become both African and world champions in succession although it would have been more if the continental tournament had started in the eighties when they were clearly the best side. The golden shoe was won by Chrisantus with 7 goals while Kroos won the golden ball and bronze shoe adding to the bronze medal won in the classification match. he had won the most valuable player award at the European championship, He went on to become one of the greatest midfielders of all time with a very successful career, a world champion at the senior level won in 2014 he won six champions league titles (one with Bayern Munich and Five with Real Madrid) a joint record and won other major titles. Nigeria had set a precedence winning the first tournament in China when it was sixteen teams and the first- twenty-four team tournament in south Korea, another remarkable trends in victory was that all their three wins came in Asia, it became a fortress, a home away from home.
Nigeria hosted the next edition and it was logical that they were expected to win, they started poorly against Germany, as at the 47th minute Mario Gotze`s goal had put the Germans three goals ahead, Nigeria later tied the match 3-3 and won their subsequent matches defeating Honduras and Argentina 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, Brazil could not qualify despite a place being available to a third placed team, they surrounded the top two spots with a narrow 1-0 defeats to debutant Switzerland and Mexico. Ghana did not qualify and Nigeria were getting optimistic, they thrashed New Zealand 5-0 in the round of 16, tournament form team Spain continued with their impressive run by dispatching Africa`s other qualifiers Burkina Faso 4-1 making it four wins from as many games. In the quarter finals, Switzerland were also making progress they had defeated Brazil in the group stage, Germany in the second round and Italy in the quarter finals, victory against three great football teams, Spain defeated Uruguay 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw. and Nigeria dismissed south Korea 3-1,in the semi finals Switzerland dismantled Colombia 4-0 and Nigeria won against Spain 3-1, in the final match Nigeria lost to the Swiss by a lone goal after missing several opportunities, it seems that huge expectations and the inability to settle down caused them a rare opportunity to win at home. The finalists produced the ball winners with the gold and bronze going to Sani Emmanuel and Ramon Azeez while Ben Khalifa added the silver ball to their winners medal the first football tournament won by the Swiss, the golden shoe had several players with five goals with the award given to Borja from Spain and the silver shoe to Sani Emmanuel the Swiss Siegrist won the golden glove. Neymar was part of the Brazilian team scoring in their 3-2 win over Japan. Isco was part of the Spanish team and part of the Real Madrid team that conquered Europe for several seasons.
Two years later Nigeria failed to qualify for this tournament in Mexico, African`s representatives Ivory Coast and Congo reached the second round and were knocked out by France and Uruguay. The host Mexico and Germany continued their winning streak extending it to four matches. In the quarter finals, Mexico defeated France and Germany won an entertaining match against the English, Uruguay were quietly making progress and set up a semi final match with Brazil, the two in-form teams, Mexico and Germany, were set to face off in a block buster semi final match, Uruguay crushed Brazil 3-0 and Mexico won against the Germans 3-2. In the final match Mexico won 2-0, becoming the first host world champions and matching Ghana`s two titles, their player Gomez won the golden ball while Ivory Coast player Coulibaly the golden shoe with 9 goals similar to the record set by Pongolle ten years ago. England`s Sterling and Netherlands`s Memphis Depay were the other notable stars from the tournament.
Asia hosted the fifteenth edition, the fourth time for the continent and from the trends in victory, it had only one possible winner, Brazil and Japan won all their three matches. Tunisia finished behind Japan and Morocco and Nigeria also topped their group with two wins and a draw, Nigeria crushed the defending champions 6-1 and held Sweden to a 3-3 draw before thrashing Iraq 5-0, Ivory Coast advanced to the second round as one of the four-third placed teams, making it a record four African teams at the knockout stage. Unfortunately, they faced Morocco and won 2-1, but this victory still contributed to a reduction in the number of African teams progressing further. when Tunisia lost to Argentina by 3-1 it was just two teams remaining, Nigeria eliminated Iran 4-1 in the last eight, Mexico knocked out Brazil by a record 11-10 penalty shoot out win after the match ended 1-1, Argentina knocked out the other African side Ivory Coast winning 2-1 while Nigeria dispatched Uruguay by two Awoniyi goals. The semi finals had three teams from Nigeria`s group with Champion Mexico and Sweden and then Argentina making up the quartet, in a rematch of the group match Nigeria again scored three goals and restricted Sweden from scoring while Mexico put an end to the run of the Argentines winning 4-1. The final was another rematch from the group stages with Nigeria winning with another 3-0 score line and dethroning the defending champion in the process, they took sole position with four titles. Kelechi Iheanacho a former Manchester City player won the golden ball and the silver shoe with an impressive six goals and seven assists, Dele Alampasu won the golden glove. Berisha from Sweden won the golden boot with seven goals. Awoniyi currently at Nottingham Forest and Yahaya finished with four goals each, their captain and right full back Mohammed scored a remarkable three goals. Nigeria scored a total of 26 goals, a tournament record. The tournament produced Kessie from Ivory Coast a future star, he went on to play for Barcelona and Milan and helped his country win her third AFCON title.
The defending Champions Nigeria went to Chile, they finished top of their group beating the United States 2-0 and the host by 5-1 and lost to Croatia by 2-1 despite taking a 20-minute lead scored by Oshimen, The Nigerian team was packed with quality with Chukwueze, Nwakali and Oshimen the trio were formidable in attack and instrumental to the team`s progress. The other sides with prospects were France which started very well, south-Korea stunned Brazil 1-0 and were the real deal, Mexico also started strongly while Mali was as impressive in the group stages. At the knockout stage Mali defeated North Korea 3-0, Belgium won against South Korea 2-0, Croatia defeated Germany 2-0 while France surprisingly lost to Coasta Rica on penalties 3-5 after a goalless encounter, Nigeria thrashed Australia 6-0 with Oshimen, scoring a hat trick with Nwakali and Chukwueze each getting a goal, it was the second time all three had scored in a match, the first was against Chile. Mexico sent the host out with a clinical 4-1 win. In the quarter finals Mali defeated Croatia, while Nigeria defeated Brazil 3-0, it was the first time they have met at this level and apart from Atlanta 1996, at the Olympics which Nigeria won during extra time, this was the first victory within regulation time, a battle between two of the most successful sides, in the semi finals Mali defeated Belgium 3-1 and Nigeria consolidated their advantage over Mexico with a 4-2 win. In the battle between the two African sides, a confrontation between the defending champion and the African champion, when Mali defeated Croatia the team that defeated Nigeria at the group stage it was an indicator of their ability and consistent performance although they had not won this tournament before, but Nigeria had only won in Asia, at half time still goalless it was delicately poised, Oshimen opened the scoring in the 56th minute and three minutes later Bamgboye sealed victory giving Nigeria the first successive title since Brazil won it sixteen years ago. They achieved the distinction of retaining the title while also extending their record with a fifth title.
Oshimen became the only player to score double digits with 10 goals, still a tournament record, he also won the silver ball finishing as runner up to Nwakali, another Kelechi, joining Iheanacho as back-to-back winners, Mali`s Ally Malle won the bronze ball and their keeper Diarra the golden glove Chukwueze won the bronze boot. The trio`s impact at the tournament was individually rewarded.
In their five victories for the world title, Nigeria had beaten two of the strongest African sides Ghana and Mali, two European teams with pedigree Germany (the most successful European team) and Spain and two-time winners and perennial favorites Mexico. They have been the best over a long period of time. Sadly, they failed to qualify for the next edition in India, another Asia country, the trend in victory had given them a fortress to conquer new grounds which enabled them to retain the title and win in another continent.
In India, from the four African qualifiers which also included Niger a debutant, China 1985 semifinalist Guinea,2015 finalist Mali and two-time winners Ghana. Like Nigeria and Guinea, Niger reached the knockout stage in their first attempt, unfortunately they were paired against Ghana the team that defeated them on penalties in the semi finals of the AFCON U17 tournament in Gabon, they lost 2-0, Ghana was defeated by another African team in the next round, two time African champions(2015,2017) Mali 2-1 but the champions lost to Spain in the semi finals and Brazil in the classification match, Spain again were losing finalist(4) a record without a title despite taking a two goal lead against England, losing 5-2 it was also a record at the finals for most goals scored as well as in any tournament with 183 goals, India and Asia had a new champion England, their youth development program had reaped multiple rewards, they went on to win the U20 world cup in south Korea, a clean sweep in Asia joining Brazil as the only male team to lift both titles in the same year with a certain Lookman Ademola in that team.Foden and Guehi were scorers in the finals with Foden winning the golden ball, Rhian Brewster with eight goals won the golden shoe other notable players were Callum Hudson-Odoi, Morgan Gibbs-White and Angel Gomes, Jandon Sancho and Emile Smith Rowe for England, Ghana`s Mohammed Kudus and Spain`s Ferran Torres.
Nigeria returned to Brazil in 2019, England the defending champions did not, from the four African entries, three of them reached the second round like in India, with African champion Cameroun crashing out in the group stage Angola, Senegal and Nigeria all crashed out to South Korea, Spain and the Netherlands respectively, of the three teams that knocked out the African teams only the Dutch reached the semifinals losing to France in the third place match, Brazil were worthy host defeating the only host world champion Mexico in the finals, just like host Mexico and Switzerland in 2009 they won all their seven matches, a record joining Nigeria`s win of Japan 1993, Ghana in 1995 and Brazil again in 1997 although it was six matches but a perfect winning ratio, the best statistical performance.
In the 2023 world cup hosted in Indonesia, again Nigeria did not qualify, African champion Senegal had set a standard in Africa, joined by Morocco, Burkina Faso and Mali. It was only Burkina Faso that failed to reach the knock out stage. Senegal lost to France on penalties with the same shoot out, Morocco prevailed against Iran while Mali crushed Mexico 5-0, In an all-African quarter finals Mali defeated Morocco 1-0 but lost to France in the semi finals and Argentina in the third-place encounter, Germany won the world cup for the first time by defeating France a team they defeated in the European championship final by the same means. they were two goals up and the match was taken to penalties and they held their resolve winning 4-3. Germany`s Paris Brunner won the golden ball which he did at the European championship, the golden ball was won by Argentina`s Ruberto with teammate Echeverri winning the bronze boot another player signed to Manchester City, Nigerian Ethan Nwanieri another notable player currently giving a good account of himself at Arsenal, the youngest ever player at 15years 181 days to play in the English Premiership.
So far in all the editions Nigeria has been to 12 tournaments, with 8 finals from 8 semifinal matches a world record in any FIFA tournament, the winning streak clearly unmatched by any great side at any FIFA tournament, also the golden Eaglets has reached the most finals and having the most wins, it has given them a comfortable lead, consolidating them as the best.
Notable stars and their other Achievements
The achievement of the golden Eaglets has provided a platform for further success at the other levels although they have been unable to add a title at the U20 world cup reaching two finals, in 1989 with Ugbade and a core of more than seven players from the Canada silver winning team. they reached another final in 2005 with Mikel Obi as the playmaker and inspiration, other players were Vanzekin, Obasi, Promise and Okoronkwo. Their bronze medal in 1985(Brazil had gold in the U20 and bronze in the U17), combined with the world title, marked a milestone achievement, as they, along with Brazil, became the first teams to win medals in both the U17 and U20 categories in the same year then Portugal equaled it in 1989 and Argentina in 1995—a record for medal value — until Brazil, and later England, achieved double gold.
This demonstrated their success in the junior tournaments from the very beginning, At the Olympics, they became champions, winning Africa’s first-ever gold medal just like in the U17 tournament which was made possible by the outstanding performances of Kanu with Oruma, Oparaku and Babayaro strong members of the winning team from Japan and of course Ikpeba from the Scotland tournament complemented by Okocha, Amokachi, Amunike West, Oliseh and Okechukwu.
Since the introduction of three overage players in Barcelona 1992 until Spain won the title for the second time in 2024 in Paris, only current European champions Spain, Copa America and world champions Argentina and the almighty Brazil have been able to win more, countries that have been established even before Nigeria`s independence, this shows how far and how well Nigeria have been able to compete against the very best with remarkable results to back it up.
The Olympic conquest was after the bulk of that team had won their second AFCON title in Tunis and an outstanding debut world cup performance in 1994 in the United States which led them to be rated as the best ever ranked African side peaking at number 5, they also won the Afro/Asian cup in 1995. Ugbade and Akpoborie winners in China also played their part in that glorious period with another strong showing in France 1998, in another brilliant display, they topped their group with a game to spare by defeating 1994 semifinalists Bulgaria and Spain a team packed with stars, Their success continued with a third African championship in 2013, made possible by Mikel Obi—a player who embodied the potential unlocked when talent is given time to develop, even without early victories or trophies, The Nigerian Football Federation also provided an innovative leadership which deserves credit gaining from the English rebuild which would yield several dividends which immensely benefited Nigeria as well when they convinced Victor Moses to represent them, with Mikel Obi,Enyeama, Emenike,Omeruo another product of Nigeria`s U17 in 2009 and his teammates, They went on to secure the Africa Cup of Nations title, with Victor Moses scoring twice against Ethiopia to ensure qualification to the knockout stage. He was also named in the Team of the Tournament for his outstanding performance. The tournament team also included Enyeama, Emenike, Mikel Obi and Efe Ambrose. he was part of the team that featured at the 2014 and 2018 world cup, he scored against Argentina at the 2018 world cup, One of Nigeria’s most remarkable success stories from any player with multiple nationalities.
The discussion focuses on the impact of Nigeria`s U17 players developing into some of the best in the world. Nigeria had a blueprint A slight variation is seen with Alex Iwobi, who, although he did not play in the U17 World Cup, represented England at that level winning the victory shield in 2011. He went on to contribute to Nigeria’s bronze and silver successes at AFCON and was part of the senior World Cup at Russia, Nigeria also reached the semifinals of the Olympics twice, the only African side with multiple medals with Mikel Obi leading Nigeria to bronze at the 2016 Olympics despite several difficult challenges a legacy that enhanced his status at the National team. Their silver medal winning team in 2008 had Vanzekin, Obasi, Promise and Okoronkwo. This transition helps in building a team for success especially if it is done efficiently. At the club level, Nigerian players from the U17 squad have achieved remarkable success, winning major European tournaments such as the Champions League and Europa League, and securing titles in nearly all of the Big Five leagues. Kanu teamed up with Finidi and other emerging Dutch stars to win the Champions League in 1995 under coach Louis Van Gaal. They triumphed over the legendary AC Milan team and also secured multiple Dutch titles, including three consecutive Eredivisie, Kanu won the UEFA cup with Inter in 1997, West was also an integral part of the team, at Arsenal, Kanu won the Premier League titles in 2002 and 2004, with the Gunners going unbeaten in 2004, earning them the title- the Invincibles. Four years later he helped the modest English club Portsmouth to win the FA cup scoring the winning goal and earning the man of the match award, this was achieved with international team mate Utaka, this union had been fruitful in the national team, with the most famous contribution between both players at the AFCON 2004 in Tunisia, Kanu`s delightful telepathic pass to Utaka for the winning goal to knock out the defending champion Cameroun, still on the Nigerian success story in England, several years later another U17 prodigy, Mikel Obi played a crucial role in Chelsea’s Champions League victory in 2012. He helped thwart the exceptional Barcelona team, coached by Guardiola and featuring football legends like Messi, Iniesta and Xavi, in the semifinals, before defeating Bayern Munich at their stadium to win their first champions league title. they also won the Europa league the following season and were English Champions twice in 2010 and 2015 he also won four FA cups. Another European champion, Chukwueze played a key role in helping Villarreal and coach Emery secure their club`s first-ever European title in 2021, winning the Europa League after defeating Manchester United 11-10 in an epic penalty shootout win, In France Oruma won the French league with Lens in 1998 while Japan 1993 champion Pascal Karibe Ojigwe won the Bundesliga in 1998 with FC Kaiserslautern, In Italy, Oshimen helped Napoli recapture the Serie A, a title that they last won in 1990, claiming the Serie A footballer of the year award and the Capocannoniere.
